




In 2005, the internet was still young. SBC had not yet absorbed AT&T. Websites were mostly HTML coded monstrosities, with the traditional left nav. And people liked to get their bills in the mail.
Yes, this is practically vintage, but it was groundbreaking at the time. For each new eBill sign-up with SBC, we planted a virtual tree in a virtual forest—nearly 500,000 in just a few months. Each sign-up also gave $1 to The National Arbor Day Foundation to plant real trees.
I illustrated the vector trees, hills, and mountains, along with the clouds that drifted across the sky, the birds that chirped and the soaring eagle. The scene even turned to night or day, depending on when it was being viewed.

But of the many accolades this site won, the two I’m most proud of are The National Arbor Day Foundation (NADF) 2006 National Arbor Day award and a Silver Halo Award for Best Environmental/Wildlife Program.
